Dr. Elizabeth A. Hays Travel Award
The Florida Academy of Sciences provides travel support for students enrolled at colleges and universities to present papers at its annual meetings. This awards program, established in 2010, is supported by an endowed account, the Dr. Elizabeth A. Hays Travel Award Fund. Awards, which are based on demonstrated financial need, may be used for the costs of travel, lodging, and meals. In addition, the registration fee is waived for award recipients, and the student is given Academy student membership for the calendar year of the meeting. Instructions for applying are issued in the Call-for-Abstracts, released by email to members and posted on the Academy’s website in the autumn that precedes the meeting in March.
The endowment that supports this program was established with a bequest of the estate of Academy member Dr. Elizabeth Hays (1940–2009), Associate Professor of Physiology, Barry University. Betty served the Academy for 18 years in many important offices, including Secretary (2003–2009). The Academy published her final journal article in 2008 and her obituary by Jeremy Montague in Florida Scientist 72(4):449 (2009). Many members, who share Betty’s value of encouraging student participation in the Academy, have contributed to the Hays endowment over the years.
