SABBATICAL TRAVEL SUPPORT FOR FLORIDA FACULTY IN STEM
Description
Florida Academy of Sciences supports travel during sabbatical leave of faculty at Florida non-profit colleges and universities in disciplines related to those of the Academy. Support will be granted as needed to fill gaps in funding for the applicant from other sources. Awards for successful proposals considered on a competitive basis will be made to the applicant’s institution to oversee distribution for the intended purposes.
It is envisioned that faculty sabbatical funding might fall short in travel funds if sabbatical leave is not fully supported by institutional resources or by outside agencies or organizations. Covered travel expenses may only be those expenses authorized by the institution’s purchasing policies. The grant will cover future travel during the period of leave. Current travel or reimbursement for past travel during leave is not eligible for support.
Travel directly related to the scholarly purpose of sabbatical leave (e.g., visitation of other laboratories/institutions, fieldwork, specialized training) is eligible for support. Travel to attend or to present at professional meetings will not be supported.
Application
Applications are invited that are prepared within the guidelines of the institution’s requirements. In addition to a cover letter on institutional letterhead, the applicant should include a copy of the faculty member’s request for sabbatical leave to the dean or other administrator, a copy of the letter of award for sabbatical leave to the faculty member from the institution, sources and amounts of funding available for travel, a description of intended travel, justification for inclusion of travel for the scholarly purposes of the sabbatical, an explanation of why additional funds are needed, a budget for travel expenses, a timeline for the sabbatical leave, and a full curriculum vitae. Personal data or other information about the applicant (e.g., salary, identification/Social Security numbers) may be redacted from the documents. Application must be made before the starting date of the sabbatical period. Applications may be submitted in writing (Florida Academy of Sciences, P.O. Box 668, Melbourne FL 32902) or as one or more PDFs to the Academy’s official email (flacademyofsciences@gmail.com) for consideration by the selection committee.
It is expected that the Academy’s support will be acknowledged in any scholarly products, publications, press releases, and presentations related to the sabbatical, examples of which should be provided to the Academy. The recipient is encouraged to report on sabbatical research at a subsequent annual meeting of the Academy and to submit appropriate manuscripts to the editor of Florida Scientist for peer review and possible publication.
Stipend
The maximum stipend will be $1,000 for domestic travel or $2,500 for foreign travel per recipient. Multiple awards will be made annually depending on Endowment funds budgeted for the year, but only one award will be made per institution each calendar year.
Deadlines
Applications will be accepted at any time before the start of sabbatical leave. The selection committee will meet at least quarterly and as often as monthly to consider applications. Upon notification of an award and after the Academy receives an IRS Form W9 from the grantee, the Academy’s treasurer will mail a check, made to the institution, to the grantee for direction to the appropriate institutional accounting fund.
